ARIES SEASON
Happy Aries season – time of being bold, being a little (or a lot) reckless, trailblazing and generally Going For It! The sun moves into the cardinal fire sign on March 20th, shifting the spotlight into its place of exaltation from the dreamy waters of Pisces. In Aries, the sun encourages us to embody that initial spark of fire, pursue our desires shamelessly, and have fun in the process.
Meanwhile, Mars and Venus are still moving through Aquarius. Venus is picking up speed and pulling away from its travel companion, leading us to the first significant transit of Aries season: the meeting of Saturn and Venus on March 28th. This conjunction highlights ideas around commitment, boundaries, bonds and sustainability that will be specific to where Aquarius falls in your personal chart. With this part of our lives already activated by the ongoing Saturn-Uranus square, Venus asks us to pause and reflect on how our relationships, connections, desires and values inform the bones of our life.
There is then a second activation of this late-Aquarius degree when Mars conjoins Saturn on April 4th, after Venus has moved away. This transit – with both planets’ functions relating to separation – is somewhat more challenging. In Saturn’s sign, Mars is yoked to the ruling planet’s goals of self-protection, establishing structure, organising information and evaluating what to refuse while still desiring the closeness of a fight. It may be that our thoughts or decisions from the Venus-Saturn conjunction lead into feelings of isolation, doubt, being under pressure, or having to let go of something. With both of these transits happening square to (at the bending of) the lunar nodes, there could be uncertainty, tension and possibly anxiety as new information comes to light and destabilises our circumstances. Remember that you don’t have to act on your discomfort immediately. Take the time to feel into what you need.
These two events will mark the beginning of Aries season, particularly for fixed rising sign charts (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius). On April 5th, however, we get the soothing balm of Venus moving into its sign of exaltation, Pisces, and breaking free from both Mars and Saturn. Venus in Pisces, co-present with Jupiter in its home sign, will allow us to lean into its true creative, sweet, harmonious and juicy potential. Venus in Pisces wants us to feel, to be non-verbal, to indulge our desires and to immerse ourselves in music, art, sensory experiences and collective rest.
During this time Jupiter moves closer to Neptune, before the two planets finally meet on April 8th. After the dry pressure of the Aquarius transits, Venus and Jupiter in Pisces will feel like spring rain on a warm day – bringing relief to cracked earth, helping us unfurl and loosen the tension in our bodies. Neptune the great dissolver provides a contrast to Saturn’s demands, but in a different area of our life. Wherever Pisces lands in our charts will likely be where we want to embrace fantasy, escapism, and maybe even some sense of dissociation or avoidance simply because those things feel really good. Especially when other parts of our life feel heavy and difficult. The trick is to work out how we can allow ourselves to surrender – to be boundless and fluid – without losing the parts of our connection to reality that keep us safe.
The moment we’re in – with the relationship between the different planets in Aquarius and Pisces – connects to longer-term planetary cycles, asking us to work with how we understand survival, intimacy, boundaries and grief:
What do you keep yourself distant from out of fear? Do you fear intimacy, or do you fear losing it? Does deep intimacy feel so important that you won’t settle for anything less?
How long have you had to protect yourself? Can you grieve how early you had to learn that vulnerability could kill parts of you that deserved to live?
Can you acknowledge the heartbreak of knowing that you’ve had to keep some parts of you buried because their freedom is threatening to the world we live in? What are the spaces that you can trust to hold them?
The emergence of the Sun into Aries and this current astrological weather makes me think about serotiny, a trait shown by certain plants in environments where regular wildfires occur. Instead of releasing their seeds at maturity, serotinous plants depend on an environmental trigger (commonly fire) to release them, as an adaptation to take advantage of better germination and survival rates post-fire. Under difficult conditions, it’s important to protect yourself in ways that don’t keep you trapped, that allow you to stay open to opportunities for new growth. Part of that work is taking stock of where you are in different cycles of change.
Given that we’re getting a lot of air, fire and water energy this Aries season, here is a spread that can help us work on balancing those elements and grounding through intentionally inviting in some earth energy.
Card 1: How can I bring in some ease around my planning, boundary and communication work?
Card 2: What is here to support me in dreaming and surrendering without losing myself?
Card 3: What passions and exciting desires are calling for my energy?
Card 4: How can I best take care of my body, my sense of grounding and spaciousness?
Card 5: Information around integrating all these elements in my life.
I hope this spread is helpful in some way, and that this Aries season is a fruitful one for you. If there is chaos, I hope it is generative and temporary. Wishing you grounding, joy, fun and growth!
