THE FOOL — leap like a bunny
The first word of the story of the Major Arcana, the 0 of the tarot, the promise of a shiny new beginning -- for many, the fool is a card that embodies (and invites us to embody) the clear & direct energy of initiation. In the often-cited /Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom/, Rachel Pollack describes the Fool as "not [being] fixed like the other cards," as the pure vibe in which "no difference exists between possibility and reality," as the mere concept that "every moment is a new starting point" (Pollack 16), and, like, yes to all that.
The Fool (for me!) feels like a reminder that within any moment (the literal present moment; or the larger conceptual ✨moment✨ of life in which one finds oneself), one can choose to really listen to one's most trusting & ready-to-try-anything self. The Fool feels like following one's own lead, without needing to know the why of it — as Nanda’s artwork so evocatively captures. The Fool feels like taking the leap that feels natural, without thinking ahead to the landing. Who cares about the landing, when the leap is simply for the joy of it all?
The Fool also gives me the energy of being THE PROTAGONIST, but in a way that is artless, un-selfconscious, unaware -- in contrast with the more knowing energies of the Magician or the High Priestess cards that follow. The fool's self-sovereignty is about self-trust more than self-knowing. Head empty, heart open. Ya know? Like Jungkook's bunny smile: pure & unpracticed. Where does that energy show up for you?
Artist’s Interpretation of The Fool by @eunand.a
When Nat (@dasmyego) came to me about this project, I started researching a little bit more about Tarot and the cards and The Fool had caught my attention since the beginning. Then Sam (@waxwing.tarot) beautifully explained more about it’s meanings and interpretations, and there was no one I could relate it to more than Jungkook. For me, The Fool’s history connects perfectly with JK’s: an opportunity to trust yourself and your next steps. For this design I took a big inspiration on his journey through becoming an idol: being the youngest among the members, his innocence and braveness (also, shoutout to all the times he’s done bungee jumps and physically scary things in general). “My Time” was a song that really inspired me as well, as he talks about his path with BTS and tells us exactly how he felt: scared about this beginning of entering a whole new reality, facing ups and downs, but also having the support of all his loved ones (BTS, friends, family and ARMY), and that he is “Happy that we met each other / Now til’ the very end”.
